CREDIT REPORT GUIDE

Common credit report errors

A focused list of details worth checking on every report.

Review every report individually. The same account can appear differently across the nationwide credit reporting companies, and an issue may appear on only one report.

Identity and mixed files

Look for unfamiliar names, addresses, Social Security number variations or accounts belonging to another person. Some outdated details are less serious than an account that is not yours, but make a note of anything that could point to a mixed file or identity theft.

Account and status errors

Check for a closed account shown as open, duplicate debts, incorrect balances, late payments you dispute, or a debt already paid but shown otherwise. Compare the report to statements and confirmation records. Note the exact field and date at issue instead of disputing the entire account without explanation.

Missing context and follow-up

If an item is inaccurate or incomplete, dispute it with the reporting company and the business that furnished it, when appropriate. Preserve copies of your evidence and response. Accurate negative information is not necessarily removable merely because it is unfavorable.
